Attitude

The right attitude when driving

As a driving instructor, I often see many drivers with a wide range of attitudes when they get behind the wheel. While some approach driving with caution and respect, others believe they are invincible and can do no wrong. Unfortunately, this latter attitude can have serious consequences and it is crucial that all drivers understand the importance of having the right mindset when operating a vehicle.

Having the right attitude when driving means acknowledging the responsibilities and dangers that come with being behind the wheel. It means treating other drivers with respect, following traffic laws, and always being mindful of road conditions. Drivers with this attitude approach driving with caution, understanding that even the slightest mistake can result in serious consequences.

On the other hand, those who believe they are infallible approach driving with a sense of arrogance and disregard for the rules of the road. They believe they can speed, tailgate, run red lights, and engage in other dangerous behaviors without consequences. Unfortunately, this type of thinking can result in serious accidents and even death.

One of the biggest dangers of thinking you are infallible is overconfidence. When drivers become overconfident, they start to take unnecessary risks, such as cutting off other drivers, making sudden lane changes without indication, or engaging in aggressive driving behaviors. This can result in serious accidents, injuries, and property damage.

Another danger of thinking you are infallible is distraction. When drivers believe they are invincible, they often become complacent and start to engage in other activities while driving, such as using their phones, eating, or even grooming themselves. This type of distraction greatly increases the chances of an accident, as it reduces a driver's attention and reaction time.

Drivers who believe they are infallible also tend to ignore traffic laws, believing that they are above the rules. They speed, run red lights, and engage in other dangerous behaviors, putting themselves and others in danger. This type of behavior can result in fines, points on their licence, and even criminal charges if their actions result in an accident or injury to others.

It's important to remember that the consequences of thinking you are infallible and never do anything wrong (we are all human) can be severe. Drivers who engage in dangerous and reckless behavior can cause serious accidents, leading to injuries, property damage, and even death. In addition, they may face serious legal consequences, such as fines, points on their licence, and even criminal charges.

It is crucial that all drivers understand the importance of having the right attitude and none of us are perfect, mistakes can be made by ALL of us, when operating a vehicle. Having the right mindset means acknowledging the responsibilities and dangers that come with being behind the wheel, and always driving with caution and respect for others on the road. On the other hand, thinking you are infallible can result in serious consequences, including accidents, injuries, property damage, and even death. So, always approach driving with the right attitude, and never believe that you are above the rules of the road.
