I had a great question form a student recently, so I thought I'd write about it here since it might be something other learners would like to know. My students know I love being asked questions.
I don't charge per question so the more you ask the more you'll get from the lesson.
When do I use my hazard lights?
To be honest I can't even remember the last time I used my hazard lights, I know I haven't used them in my current car, which I've had for 2 years. the official guide on how or when to use them are below.
Hazard warning lights
Your vehicle’s hazard warning lights must not be used unless the vehicle is:
- Stopped and obstructing the path of other vehicles or pedestrians.
- Slow-moving and obstructing other road users
- Stopped in an emergency stopping lane
- Stopped to sell a product such as food and refreshment.
- Driving in hazardous weather conditions
- Fitted with hazard lights as part of an anti-theft or alcohol interlock device.
That's IT, I try not to get myself into any of these situations so I have no need to activate my hazard lights.
In general, it is illegal to drive with hazard lights on, unless the situation is an exception. Here are the most common ways where hazards lights are used when it’s actually illegal to do so.
- Illegal Parking
- Indecision
- Towing
- Abrupt stoppage
- Slow moving traffic
- Just because
Only activate them when your car has become a potential hazard on the road due to forces beyond your control. Hazard lights aren’t a park anywhere button in the eyes of the law, and you could be fined if you use them recklessly.
While I'm here it's a good opportunity to talk about
Horns and other warning devices
You must not use the horn or any other warning device unless:
- You need to warn other road users that your vehicle is approaching
- You need to warn animals to get off the road
- The horn is being used as part of an anti-theft or alcohol interlock device fitted to your vehicle.
