Mobile phone use

Just don't do it

What can I do, with my phone

Legal mobile phone use. I will only be going into what is legal mobile phone use for Learner and provisional licence holders.

Over the years my phone has trained me very well, whenever it makes a sound or has a notification I'm powerless to resist the temptation of reaching for it (just like the call of the Siren). Most...I mean - ALL, messages, calls etc. can wait until you have arrived at your destination before responding. Nothing is so urgent or critical for you to get a fine over or worse have a crash because you didn't wait. Trust me everyone will understand if you reply later. I put my phone in the glovebox and enable do not disturb while driving (see below on how to enable it).

Am I permitted to:-

  • Make or receive audio phone call - NO
  • Use music or audio functions - NO
  • Use as a driver's aid (e.g. navigation, Speed Advisor app or dispatch system) - NO
  • Access a Digital Driver Licence - ONLY after a police officer has asked you to do so.
  • Use wallet functions (make a transaction at a drive thru, show a coupon or voucher, or to access an area) - ONLY if the vehicle is: Stationary; and Off the road (such as in a carpark, driveway or drive thru)

I think it's obvious to everyone that all other functions, including video calling, texting, emailing, social media, web browsing and photography are prohibited unless parked. It is also illegal to hold and use a mobile phone at any time while driving.

Learner, P1 and P2 licence holders

In a nut shell - Restricted licences holders including learner, P1 and P2 drivers are not permitted to use their phone at all while driving. This includes use of hands-free and Bluetooth functions. I know it’s sad, the rules are there for a reason. To keep you and other road users safe. 😔

Illegal mobile phone use will result in heavy penalties including demerit points and fines, which could mean the loss of your licence. My suggestion is to put your phone away either in the glovebox or somewhere out of reach until you arrive at your destination. It's also a good idea if your phone has do not disturb while driving to enable it.
