Parent responsibility

Start role modeling good driving attitudes and behaviours now

As parents, we have a great responsibility to shape and influence our children's attitudes and behaviours, especially when it comes to driving. With the rise of traffic accidents and fatalities, it is more important than ever for parents to model good driving behaviours before their children become learner drivers. This way, they will learn the right habits and have a positive attitude towards driving, which can make all the difference in ensuring their safety and that of others on the road.

As a driving instructor, I have seen firsthand the impact that parents can have on their children's driving habits. Children who grow up observing their parents following traffic laws and driving safely are more likely to develop these habits themselves, making them safer and more responsible drivers. On the other hand, children who see their parents breaking traffic laws and engaging in dangerous driving behaviours including road rage  may think that these actions are acceptable when they start driving. This is why it is so important for parents to model good driving behaviours they want to see in their children before they become learner drivers.

Good driving behaviours include following traffic rules, obeying speed limits, using seat belts, avoiding distractions, and exhibiting patience and consideration for other drivers. By modelling these behaviours, parents are setting a positive example for their children and helping them understand the importance of road safety. Children who see their parents following traffic laws and driving safely are more likely to develop these habits themselves and become responsible drivers.

However, if your child is demonstrating a poor driving attitude, it's important to reflect on your own driving habits before becoming annoyed with them. You might be surprised to find that you have been modelling negative driving behaviours that your child has picked up on. For example, if you tend to speed, make sudden lane changes, or engage in aggressive driving, your child may think that these behaviours are acceptable when they start driving. This is why it is crucial to be mindful of your own driving and to make any necessary changes before teaching your child to drive.
Additionally, it is important for parents to have open and honest discussions with their children about the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of following traffic laws. Explain the consequences of breaking traffic laws, such as fines, points on their licence, and even criminal charges, and how these actions can put themselves and others in danger. Provide them with the tools they need to make informed decisions and help them understand that driving is a privilege that comes with great responsibility.
It is also important for parents to be involved in the learning process when their children start taking driving lessons. Whether it's accompanying them on their lessons, going for a drive with them, or simply talking about their experiences, parents can help their children feel more confident and supported as they learn to drive. By being an active participant in the learning process, parents can help their children understand the importance of following traffic laws and driving safely.

Parents can also encourage their children to take driver education courses, both in school and outside of school. These courses can help young drivers understand the importance of road safety, and how to stay safe while driving. Driver education courses can also provide young drivers with the knowledge and skills they need to become safe and responsible drivers.

In summary, it is critical for parents to model good driving behaviours before their children become learner drivers. By doing so, they can help their children understand the importance of following traffic laws, driving safely, and treating other drivers with respect. If your child is demonstrating a poor driving attitude, take the time to reflect on your own driving habits and make any necessary changes. Be an active participant in the learning process and have open and honest discussions with your children about the dangers of reckless driving. Encourage your children to take driver education courses, and help them become safe and responsible drivers. With the right guidance and support, your child will grow up to be a responsible and safe driver, and you can feel confident that you have done your part in keeping them and others on the road safe.
