How to turn right at traffic lights

When and how to turn right at traffic lights

This common situation can be confusing and stressful for many learner drivers, I hope I can help to clear up some misunderstandings and misconceptions. The situation in the image below can be dangerous and confusing, with high levels of stress during peak traffic times.

You are the blue car

When turning right at traffic lights and you are the first car, move forward on the green light into the intersection passed the stop line (unless there is a red arrow) and wait for the oncoming traffic to clear or there is a break in traffic. If the green light changes to amber or red while you are in the middle of the intersection, you are allowed to turn right, you must turn as soon as it's safe to do so, always proceed with caution. This is the accepted method once you are passed the stop line at the intersection. Make sure your front wheels and car are straight and not blocking the oncoming traffic. If your wheels are partially turned to the right and your car is hit from behind, you will be pushed into the oncoming traffic. We DON'T want that!
