Your older driver assessment, done your way
I'm Albert, an accredited Older Driver Assessor serving Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Eastern Beaches, Bayside and Inner West. I come to your home, take you through it calmly and explain your result in plain English.
Who are you booking for?
People arrive here for different reasons. Choose the one that sounds like you.
Taking your own assessment
Turning 85 is a milestone, not a verdict. You get to choose how you meet the licence requirement, and you can do it in the streets you know best.
- Call or book online and ask me anything first
- Practise with a refresher lesson if you want to
- Use your own car or my dual control car
- Keep your independence on the road
Organising it for your partner
You know how they drive and how they feel about being tested. Call me and we'll sort the details together. You're welcome to be there on the day if they'd like that.
- Book on their behalf
- Check the licence letters and what they mean
- Plan a refresher if nerves are the issue
- Get a clear explanation of the result
Helping Mum or Dad
Letters, medical forms and licence options can pile up quickly. I'll explain what the practical assessment involves and what happens next, and I'll treat your parent with respect throughout.
- Ring me on their behalf
- Understand assessment versus modified licence
- Get honest, kind feedback on their driving
- Know where things stand afterwards
Assessment day, start to finish
From the first call to your result, you deal with one person.
You call
We talk through what you need and book a time.
I arrive
I meet you at home or another agreed spot.
Warm-up drive
A preparation drive to settle in and ask questions.
The assessment
About 15 to 20 minutes on the road, in normal traffic.
Your result
I explain it clearly, with feedback you can use.
Allow around an hour for the whole session.
Three ways to meet the requirement at 85
You decide how to handle your licence each time it comes round.
Accredited assessor
- Starts from your home
- No limit on assessments
- Fee paid to the assessor
- Keep your unrestricted licence if you pass
Service NSW driving test
- Done at a testing centre
- Up to three attempts
- Keep your unrestricted licence if you pass
- Check fees with Service NSW
Modified licence
- No practical assessment
- Driving limited to an area or distance from home
- Yearly medical assessment still applies
- Ask Service NSW what suits you
Both tests follow Transport for NSW assessment requirements, so an assessor visit is a more personal test, not an easier one. If driving shows a clear danger (a serious fail), Transport for NSW advises the licence will be cancelled. This page covers car licences. Heavy vehicle tests are done by Service NSW.
What I look at
Safe driving in everyday traffic. Nothing tricky.
Nervous? Try a refresher first
Nerves are normal, even for very experienced drivers. A separate refresher lesson gives you honest feedback and a chance to refresh the current road rules before the real thing. Transport for NSW recommends refresher training for older drivers preparing for assessment. A preparation drive is always included in the assessment itself.
Ask about a refresherWhere I come to you
I travel to homes across five council areas in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Eastern Beaches, Bayside and Inner West. Type your suburb or postcode to check.
No match in the list. Call me on 0499 096 255 and we'll check whether I can reach you.

Common questions
At what age do I need an assessment?
From 85, if you want an unrestricted car licence. After that it's every two years, alongside your yearly medical assessment. Follow any letter you get from Transport for NSW.
Which suburbs do you cover?
The Randwick City, Waverley, Woollahra, Bayside and Inner West council areas. The full suburb list is on this page. Not sure about your address? Call me and we'll check.
Do I have to use Service NSW?
No. You can use an accredited Older Driver Assessor instead, and I can start from your home.
Can I use my own car?
In many cases yes, if it's suitable, registered and roadworthy. My dual control car is available too for an additional charge, subject to availability.
Can my family book for me?
Yes. Sons, daughters, partners and carers are all welcome to call.
What if I don't pass?
With an accredited assessor there's no limit on assessments, and a fee applies each time. Service NSW allows up to three attempts. I'd suggest we talk through any concerns before you try again.
How long does it take?
The on-road part is generally 15 to 20 minutes. Allow around an hour overall.
Is it easier than the Service NSW test?
No, both follow Transport for NSW requirements. What differs is the experience: home start, one person and a calmer pace.
What's a modified licence?
It lets you skip the practical assessment but limits where you can drive. The yearly medical assessment still applies.
